The day finally came! Brett matched into an Ortho program, and we found out that we will be moving to San Antonio, TX sometime in May or June! It was completely surreal waiting to find out where we would be heading. This week was full of excitement and anticipation. Let me just explain a few details real quick.
First, Brett found out on Monday, March 11 whether or not he had been accepted into any program at all. Every medical student received an email at 11am. You think that they would be kind enough to let you know where you were accepted but NO. They make you wait until FRIDAY (March 15) to find that out. So Brett received his email and we were thrilled that it said he had matched. Now we had to wait the rest of the week to find out where. Needless to say it was a pretty anxiety ridden week.
Second, when Friday rolled around we didn't just get another email saying where you went. Instead we all (every student and their families) went down to the school at 11am to find out. You could wait until 12pm and get another email but who really wants to wait an extra hour when you have already waited all week. So everyone squeezes into this tiny room that cannot realistically fit everyone in it and we wait.
The school administrators call each person up one by one in RANDOM order and hand them an envelope. I swear they stuck Brett's name as far down the list as possible. I was dying to know where we were going! The room starts to get pretty loud once this process starts. People are clapping and cheering when someone they know is called for their envelope, and you start to hear random burst of screaming and crying as people get back to their tables and open up their letters. Time goes by very slowly when you listen to 100+ names be called before its your turn.
When Brett's name was finally announced we were both a little on edge. He hurried up to the podium and back to our table. By the time he got his letter open I couldn't make my eyes focus on the words. I could see them on the paper but for some reason I couldn't understand what they were saying. It wasn't until Brett said it out loud that it sunk in and I started freaking out.
I couldn't be more thrilled with his placement! Now my life consists of neighborhood searching, house hunting, and financial planning (all that boring adult stuff ;)).
